So much of meeting people is wrapped around alcohol that not drinking can feel like sitting out the whole game. It is not. The drink was never the thing that made people connect. A shared moment did. Once you build your social life around activities and open rooms instead of a bar tab, meeting people without drinking stops feeling like a limitation and starts feeling like an edge.
Do you actually need alcohol to connect?
No. What builds closeness is doing something together, especially something a little new or active. Couples and strangers who share novel, engaging activities feel closer afterward, and that has nothing to do with what is in the glass (Aron, Norman, Aron, McKenna, and Heyman, 2000). The shared experience is the bond. Alcohol just lowers the nerves, and there are better ways to do that than a drink.
Where do you go if not the bar?
- Anything active. Run clubs, climbing gyms, rec leagues, dance classes. Built-in reason to talk, built-in reason to come back.
- Daytime third places. Coffee shops, bookstores, farmers markets. Low pressure, sober by default, easy to linger.
- Hobby meetups and classes. Pottery, language exchange, board game nights. You bond over the thing, not over shots.
- Sober-curious nights. More cities have them every year. Everyone there is meeting people clear-headed on purpose.
How do you hold your own at a bar without drinking?
Order a soda, a mocktail, anything. Nobody tracks your glass as closely as you think. Put your attention on people, not on the fact that you are not drinking. Confidence without alcohol reads as exactly that: confidence. And you will remember the whole conversation tomorrow, which is its own advantage.
Liquid courage was always a myth. The courage was yours. The drink just took the credit.
Where does frstmove fit?
A lot of people drink just to get the nerve to walk over. frstmove removes the reason for that. Go visible anywhere, a coffee shop, a class, an event, and see who nearby is open to connecting. Send a Move, and if they Move back you Connect. No liquid courage required, because the guessing that made you nervous is already handled.
You do not need a drink to make the first move. Get the app, show up clear, and connect.
